Network Talent Community: Red Carpet Behind the Scenes - Network Talent Community

Posted Image

We all brisk through our People Magazine, or what have you, of the week, gazing in wonderment and jealousy at the beautifully dressed women on the red carpet (or at least I do). But as I flip through page after page of glossy magazine beauty, I not once stopped to think about the work that goes into making these statuesque celebs that I’m constantly looking at.

That was, until I happened to pop in on Jazzie, fashion artist (stylist) extraordinaire on a seemingly ordinary turned “cray cray” day. She had just received a call on her sparkle to the max rhinestone-drowned cell phone from one of her girlfriends/celebrities who asked Jazzie to not only dress her, but be her date to the Rodeo Walk of Style that would be featuring Missoni.

Lets pause for a moment so I can give you the timeline. In exactly a week, from Wednesday to Wednesday, the entire process was complete, from Jazzie getting the phone call to dress her newest plaything to sitting on the couch, nibbling at her nails, waiting to get feedback on her creation from tabloids and entertainment news shows.

Back to Wednesday, day 1. Not a moment after the phone call came and went with it’s request, Jazzie ran like a fashion monster with it’s head cut off around her just moved into new fashion castle (apartment) scattered with papers, clothing, accessories and the average mess of an eclectic artist.

“Le Book,” she screamed over and over again. “Where is Le Book?” Initially I thought she was attempting to be overdramatic by asking for some random book in French. Little did I know, Le Book is the holy grail of fashion contacts. This several volume, bound book of fashion industry glory held the name of every big designer, photographer, director, artist and on and on.

After finding the contact for Missoni in the book of fashion dreams, Jazzie had to get her celeb a piece from their collection as the red carpet event was devoted to them, she gave them a ring and ensured she would be able to receive a piece for that weekend.

The fun part began an hour later when her soon to be mannequin called saying she didn’t want to walk the red carpet, nor did she want the attention and she feared that a pimple might ruin the evening. (yes celebrities get acne just like you and me)

“I know you, I get you, I’m so excited. I don’t do this for a living, I live to do this,” yelled Jazzie into the phone.

“Let me play dress up. Now get excited. I want to hear you scream,” she said as I could hear a faint scream coming from the inside of her cell.

And play dress up she did. The following Wednesday after the event had passed, Jazzie broke her thought process down for her celeb’s outfit that killed the red carpet (in a good way, nay, in a Jazzie way).

Instead of the typical Missoni dress that many toted that night, Jazzie went for a Missoni top that was beyond the name in any use of the word, leather shorts, peep toe black platforms and accessories to the max.

Waiting for the tabloids that covered the red carpet event to come out, Jazzie was far beyond dying to know what people thought of her outfit. Katascha, her marvelous assistant, and I assured her that no news was good news but as always Jazzie had different ideas.

“I’d rather they say it was a bad outfit than nothing at all. I’d rather them say it was good but if they don’t say anything that means I didn’t catch anyone’s attention and that’s what it’s all about,” she said emphatically.

Understanding her point of view we searched but soon found the event wasn’t covered by many tabloids, although images of her beautiful celebufriend were splashed on various sites and left up to the masses to decide what they thought of it.

Feeling more knowledgeable than ever about what it takes to get someone looking fabulous on the red carpet, I browse through my tabloids with a new weight of truth. As I glance through, there is someone on the other end heartlessly searching for remarks on their creation. When the red carpet event is over, the game has just begun.

elegantly.disheveled - Interview with Los Angeles Stylist Jazzie Bella

A little while back I was browsing through a friend's portfolio of work she has done in relation to building a career as a hairstylist and became really intruiged by a fashion stylist that she recently worked with. Her name is Jazzie Bella and she is definitely building a name for herself within the LA fashion industry. She has worked with aritist such as the New Boyz and is currently building her own line of clothes. She definitely has the "IT Factor" that people diligently hope to one day attain. So of course I wanted delve into her life and passion for fashion.

Me - Tell us a little about your background
Jazzie - Born and raised in LA with platinum... not silver- but platinum spoon in my mouth... I came from a family of Ivy League Business men (and women), Doctors, and Lawyers... and here I was turning down Yale because I wanted to go to Otis Parsons to study Fashion Design.... it was a tough pill for my Dad to swallow... and one I had to agree to the terms of with my decision... but I follow my heart- and to be happy in life, do what you love, and if you're good at what you love- you're successful... and the rest falls perfectly into place....

Me - How did you initially get into the fashion industry and become a stylist
Jazzie - I started interning at 15 for Rock & Republic... they taught me so much and I am forever grateful to Andrew Rendell, Andrea Bernholtz,  Michael Ball, Henry Duarte, Jessica Pastor and Constanze Han with shaping and molding my career and helping me reach my potential as the designer, artist and "stylist" I am today... to be honest... I fell into it completely by accident when a Japanese denim buyer was walking into our office snapped by photo and there I was in Elle Japan's L.A style issue two months later... it was cray cray

Me - Was becoming a fashion stylist, one of your aspirations in life
Jazzie - never... being a designer- that is my ultimate dream- to see my line ...the.PERFECT... going down the runway to the music I've had in my head for years... and seeing my dream become a reality which will finally be happening next year! so thankful for my UK Support from the amazing team at Fresh Fashion Faces- especially my honey bee... Milly Bee :)

Me - What are some of the issues that you face while working in the industry?
Jazzie - my age, my looks, people under estimating my work- or thinking I can or cannot pull off the work that I envision... but at the same time it's a catch 22 because i get off... I literally fucking get OFF on proving people wrong.... it feels so good.

Me - Is there anything you wish you would've know prior to becoming a stylist
Jazzie - styling wise.. no it's a learn on the go- but if you're looking to be a designer... a real artist be prepared to have REALLY tough skin, learn to let things roll off your back- and HAVE BALLS... because you have to have the balls to really stand behind believing in your vision and telling others what is THE next big thing before they can even wrap their brain around it...

Me - Is there any advice you can share to those aspiring to become a stylist
Jazzie - work your ass off.... pick up dog's shit, our coffee, have things done before we even ask... and the cream rises to the top...

Me - Being that we have finally entered into the Fall Season, what are the must have items
Jazzie - FINALLY the rest of the world has!!! argh it's been so annoying because as a designer I work a year in advance and as a stylist we're a season ahead so.... here are the must haves:

1. Beaded fringe kimono style coats
(Specifically burnout velvet beaded fringe kimono style coats... lust)
2. Wide brim fedoras with plenty of panache.
(Think of Gucci's fall collection)- stick feathers pins etc. into the trim around the head to make it your own)
3. The New Izzue Studded Dr. Marten's (they're AMAZING)
4. Gypsy is the new Hippie
5. Silver is the new Gold
6. Goat Fur coats and caplettes
(Dying for Ann Demeulemeester's pieces... and Diane Von Furstenburg's Goat Fur Coats currently)

Me - What are your future plans within the next five years?
Jazzie - build my fashion empire- and introduce my company, my brand and my concept of the.factory (a modern day interpretation of what Andy Warhol's factory)

Launch:
 ...the.PERFECT...
(My clothing line)

launching..the.PERFECT... 's line of tees and hoodies through Fresh Fashion faces for TopShop and a the shoe line which each pair is more amazing then the next... being the bad ass little gothic hippie fashion monster I am- but with an Oscar, (I'm working on costume design for the film War Path... and really taking the costume designs to an Avant garde editorial level..), and telling people my favorite answer when they ask the exhausting, treacle question most "tourists" (that's what born and raised LA natives refer to "the transplants as": "so- what do you do for a living um... Jazzie Bella?" and I always sit back and smile, and say "what I fucking love"....

ps- I loathe Marc Jacobs
love Ann Demeulemeester- she's a true artist I love her artistic stand point and creative process... Gareth Pugh has really been on mark the previous two seasons for me. I really want Ricardo Tisci to return to what he brought Givenchy to when he first took over with the collection of the cross necklaces juxtaposed perfectly and piled on top of each other in his first debut collection as their designer... I want him to bring back that level of excitement back to Givenchy's revival. and... my line... my amazing dark, gothic hippie, elegantly disheveled, pretty little train wreck, modern day pennylane... everything that describes and encompass me, my brand, my standpoint as an artist.. and to debut it for people to take it or leave it.. my line is for the lions.. not the lambs...

"Bleed my heart, feed my art" She is truly an icon in the making.

Jazzieland

By Sarah Lorsch

This brilliant Fashion Monster strikes again… AndAgainAndAgainAndAgain...

First stop on the Jazzieland tour, you need to see the movie 300. Or if you haven’t, I’m sure you’ve at least seen the billboards and a hint of the costumes, right? Well, Jazzie’s not one to brag, which is what I’m here for, but she’s up against the costume designer of 300 for a new movie, to do costume design that will leave 300 in the dust… literally. Warriors and villains alike will be dressed to the nines in animal bones dipped in metal tied, together with leather.

Normally beyond confident and overzealous, this time Jazzie is unsure if she will be chosen for the job. “It’s me against 300,” she says. “They see me as this little kid versus someone who’s done something like [the movie] before.”

This “little kid” has papers strewn across the Coffee Bean table where I meet her, a jumbled death pile, each design more twisted and magnificent than the last. If the job becomes hers, I believe this movie she is up for will be better known for its costumes than its plotline.

As if stringing together cow femurs with leather isn’t enough, Jazzie is also currently designing a small line of shirts and shoes for Topshop. Ragged and worn vintage band shirts are her main squeeze, so we’ll see what pops out of her “Hates Screen Prints” mind-set.

More importantly, keep your eyes peeled for her shoes. Jazzie’s shoes debut swoon-worthy styles coming all in one color – Black. But when you’re Jazzie, the things you can do with black are endless. Plain, shiny, glittery, and matte black are all combined to create masterpiece after masterpiece.

Prepare to be stuck on the edge of your seat, because that’s where I’m leaving you - until Jazzie’s Topshop shoes come out and you gobble them up so fast there won’t be time for buyer’s remorse.

The last stop in Jazzieland today is where I will leave you happily shopping. If you haven’t heard of and/or visited the www.ShopNastyGal.com site, you better get on it. Exploding with fashion inspiration of both the vintage and fresh-out-of-the-sewing-machine variety, Shop Nasty is not something to miss. Grab your smelling salts before you view the shoes; a Jeffrey Campbell coma is unavoidable.

Jazzie has to restrain herself from strangling me when she finds I’ve never heard of this online treasure chest. The favor shall be returned, once my wallet has been emptied on all of the little beauties waiting to be purchased.

Shop Up!
